Highlights on history

The arrival of the Spanish in the sixteenth century brought a new way of life for the actual Ecuador's inhabitants. At first, the conquistadores governed the villages they had conquered from the new cities they built. However, towards the end of the seventeenth century, major landlords started to build large haciendas out in the countryside.

The Hacienda architecture is essentially colonial in style, varying according to the region and the prevailing climate. Among the typical elements of the Andean Hacienda, we find paved patios, large gardens, artificial fountains, hallways and spacious rooms opulently decorated with a romantic touch.

The economy of the eighteenth century was largely a barter system, with little cash circulating in the hacienda. The Catholic Church and its orders, particularly Jesuits, were granted vast land holdings, so many religious elements are found throughout the haciendas.
